João Pedro Vale’s creative path has consolidated itself through affirmation of sculpture as a privileged means of thinking about questions as diverse as national identity – including its associated myths, dramas and customs – as well as critical revisiting and interpretation of topics related to popular culture – from children’s stories to film imagery – complemented by unique attention to the complex web of affections and feelings that characterize relations in so-called post-industrial societies. The figurative drive of his work often collides with his choice of unusual materials – where form and concept merge in a process of continuous questioning of the act of reception.
